Summer has yet to officially kick in, but we are in June. Bobby Rex has 25 shows lined up between now and the end of the year. Bobby Rex wants to thank all of his new fans, friends, and loved ones he's met in recent years who continue to support live acoustic music around the world. Bobby Rex has a 13 song all original project in the works that should be completed by the fall. Some of the recent and upcoming shows feature Gordon Walters on bass guitar as accompanist. Several upcoming shows in the Chicago area will also feature Luke Angle on drums. Bobby Rex and Steve have a few private events lined up as well. For the majority of shows though, Bobby Rex will be performing solo. As sometimes happens, many of the shows where Bobby Rex has been performing are private events. The next shows open to the public are The Kerry Piper in Willowbrook at 8pm on Friday June 22nd and the Harp & Fiddle in Park Ridge at 9:30pm on Friday June 29th. Stay cool. Bobby Rex will keep you informed of any specially added shows coming up in this summer in the next post. Peace.
First off I want to say thank you to the Lovell family who allowed me to play music at Lovell's of Lake Forest restaurant for over 10 years. The restaurant opened in 1998. Live music in the Captain's Quarters was made a "thing" in October of 2004 with Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays when we first kicked if off. We kept that "thing" going every Friday and Saturday until March 2015. That stint recently ended as the building was sold to a medical university. We met some very wonderful people, and created many memories and friends there. Thank you Darice and Jay for giving me a place to practice music in front of a warm and responsive (and well fed) crowd and allowing me to get better. I probably played in the Captain's Quarters over 280 times. I have to admit sometimes it was hard work too, but we had a whole lot of fun most of the time. We had the pleasure to play dozens of fine parties in the Odyssey Room too. Many with very close family and friends.
I'll revisit the Lovell's of Lake Forest topic periodically in my blogs later when I want to reminisce. Now I want to thank all of the players who I've partnered in duos or trios with over the years, and who contributed to the overall music scene down there including Steve Wall, Randi Fox, Paul Allodi, John Metzger, John Devlin, Marlon St. John, James Wayman, Brian James, Scott Madden, Liz Berg, Andre Howard, Herman Winkler, David Thornton, Ira Sussman, Grateful Gary Gibula, Chris Grant, Dave D'alessandro, Nick Gonzalez, Gene Tenuta, and John from 4-man Acoustic Band. I've played down there with every one of these professional musicians over the 10 years.
I know I'm forgetting many others whom I've had the pleasure of sitting in with along the way too, but friends Donna Herula, Tony Nardiello, Tony Mandolini, and Phil Goldman come to mind. I'll make another post and thank some of the bands and individuals I've had the pleasure to hire over years, and there have been a lot of them. I want to also thank Derrick Suede Stout for holding down the fort in the Captain's Quarters on many, many a Friday night for several years. He and his partner Suzie had a great run at Lovell's also.
Lastly before I'm remiss, I want to thank the Burgesses for all their support at Lovell's especially at the end of 2014. We certainly worked and partied hard at the end of last year. The recent concert we performed in their yard in Bannockburn on Saturday August 1st was a wonderful success. In retrospect I think it was as close to perfect as we could get it. Jeff had a rough start this year with heart surgery in February. He had to take it easy all Spring. It was great to see him in good spirits last week. JoAnn was as fabulous as ever. I just wanted to give a shout out to their family.
Time for bed for me. Call or text me at 708-415-6410 for booking / availabilty. Some Saturdays are still open this month and throughout Sept. & Oct. I'm looking forward to booking into autumn soon.
It has been so very long since I had written anything new here, I thought I really should. It's really been hanging over my head that although I might have a lot to say, I've been too busy, too occupied every waking moment to find the time to even journal in the slightest. I don't know about you, but sitting down is painful so typing at a computer turns out to be one of my least favorite activities. You will rarely see me sitting during a gig. Luckily my health, which had become a primary concern since my lower back problems of early 2013, is good thanks to the neccessary daily workouts plus spinal correction therapy, and not sitting down so much like I'm doing right now!
One piece of information that is new is the fact that I am now using Twitter more often. Please follow me on Twitter at bobbyrex@bobrexy. I follow other musicians and science related themes and I mention my upcoming shows on occasion.
I have just updated the upcoming gigs section of this website to show 23 upcoming shows for the rest of the spring and into the summer 2014. I'm adding more dates all the time. Act soon to contact me if you have a date in mind where I can add some music to your event this year. Late summer and autumn are wide open on my calendar at the moment.
I'll be playing at Lovell's 3 more times this month so if you're up in the North Shore you know where you can find me. Send me a note, or make a comment on the Guestbook page here to let me know that some of our North Shore friends check this website. I have met many wonderful people from Chicago's North Shore over the past 10 years. Look for me at Lovell's May 9, 10, & 17.
May 2014 finds me playing at two new venues as well. Thursday May 22nd I will be solo at HB Jones in Elmhurst from 6:15 to 9:30pm. This casual eatery and drinking establishment could be right up my alley for future bookings. We'll see how it goes. Thursdays are great nights to hear live music with dinner. Then Saturday May 24th I'm at another new venue for me called Bella Mia in Midlothian from 8 to 11pm. This is one for the Southwest siders. The full name of the venue is Bella Mia Ristorante 147. It's located on 147th street. Check out their menu on their website ahead of time. There are many classic Italian dishes to choose from. I will basically be singing and playing in the very center of the entire restaurant. I'll be working up all my special tunes for this special night!
The month of May ends with another couple great shows. Expect a fun night out on Thursday, May 29th at Bakersfield Restaurant in Westmont on Ogden Ave. For this one, Bobby Rex & John Metzger will be singing and playing outside on the patio. Check the venue's website for dinner and drink specials, or better yet contact them directly for reservations for your party. We'll make this night memorable. Then Friday May 30th from 6 to 9pm Bobby & Steve will be back at Weber Grill in Lombard. They treat us very well here as we entertain the guests at Smokey Joe's Bar on a bustling Friday evening.
I just want to give a shout out to Tony and Kristin of Scapa Italian Kitchen where we will be playing on Friday evening June 6th. We're happy to be back in the regular rotation there. Mark your calendars for the 4th of July as we'll be back at Scapa that evening as well. Stay safe. Stay local.
I'll be signing off for now. I'll also be attempting to update this news feed at least 4 times a year like I started to do in 2013. 2014 finds me not playing quite as many shows as the either 2013 or 2012 had, but I'm healthier now, and preparing for a long, long music career up ahead. Please listen to my songs and download them from iTunes if you will. I'm working toward getting in the studio very soon. When you see me at a show, make mention that you read this news feed so I know it hasn't been written for naught. Thanks.
Here it is August already. Steve and I are getting ready for a show tonight that we're playing at a private residence in Bannockburn, IL. It's going to be a concert on the green so to speak with 100 guests and should be a lovely time. Weather is supposed to be perfect - a rarity in Chicago land. Hope to share photos. Read more for upcoming events and direction of the band below.
Friday August 16th Bobby Rex solo will be at Cooper's Hawk in Burr Ridge from 7 to 10pm. This is sure to be a gas. There is a band performing in the Village Center this night. Cooper's Hawk is a short walk from there. Call the restaurant for table reservations in the bar. No reservations needed at the piano bar (usually) so it is possible to just stop in.
Saturday August 17th Bobby Rex is making a guest appearance as one of "The StingRays"! The StingRays are just a tight little 4-piece 50s & 60s band that can rock the house (or street party) any night of the week! Lombard's Cruise Night is the place to be from 7 to 9pm this Saturday. Folks from all over will be bringing their lawn chairs and staking out some turf. Cool cars will be there too. Frank Rowley is on bass and vocals. Bobby Rex will be playing his Gretsch electric and also singing some lead and backup. These professionals have been doing this for a while and it is with great respect and privilage I get to do the show with them.
Friday night August 23rd Bobby & Steve will be at Winberie's in Buffalo Grove. This one is an early start at 6:30pm. This is an enjoyable place with a friendly upbeat atmosphere. Have dinner and drinks until they kick you out. We play until 9:30pm.
Saturday August 24th Bobby & Steve will be at a new place called Bakersfield in Westmont. It is right on Ogden Ave. on the North side of the street across from Standard Market. Clientele is primarily from the surrounding suburbs of Oak Brook, Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, Westmont, & Downers Grove. We will be playing outside on the patio if the weather is as nice as it is while I'm typing this. Ho Hey!
I'm looking for a gig on Saturday August 31st. I know the kids are going back to school and everybody's thinking about the end of summer. I'm referring to Labor Day Saturday. I just thought I'd throw it out there that if anyone needs a solo or duo+ act for Sat. August 31 (anniversary, birthday, bar mitzva, or pub gathering) I'm available. Call 708-415-6410 to discuss rates.
I am booked most weekends about 8 weeks in advance so please contact me a little bit ahead. This summer I have had the most requests for private parties and events ever that were all too short of notice for me to comply. Many of those inquiries sounded like fun gatherings and we would have enjoyed participating, but alas with less than a week's notice we had to decline or find subs. I do know alot of other solos and duos to fill in, this is true.
Signing off for now. Thoughts are wandering to my album+ worth of new original material I have have yet to record...
St. Patrick's Day weekend is upon us and I know there are many parties to attend. The Sprig O Mint All Stars Duo (Bobby Rex & Chris Grant) will be partying up in Antioch! I am enjoying playing solo and will continue to book as many solo dates as I can handle. See Bobby Rex solo at Cooper's Hawk in Burr Ridge on Thursday Feb. 28th & Friday March 15th from 7 to 9pm and Saturday March 30th from 8 to 11pm. Last Friday night (Feb 22nd) at Tannins in Elmhurst was a lot of fun. All the seats were taken so you could say it was standing room only. I was able to do 5 original songs during my two hour set there. Looking to play there again in late Spring or early summer.
If you'd like to hire Bobby Rex to perform at an event you are having please call me at 708-415-6410 or e-mail me at email@example.com. As well as performing solo, I put together custom duos, trios, and full bands to suit every unique event so please give me details about your specific event and your musical vision. That way I'll know which one of my musical groups will best fit the engagement. Call me for a hassle free quote.
Lastly I'd like to mention an upcoming show at Grand Tavern in Brookfield, IL on Friday April 19th. This Bobby Rex Duo will be doing a bunch of original songs along with popular cover songs & requests. Save the date Friday April 19th. The show starts at 9pm and runs until 12:30am. This will be my first time here and I'm looking forward to a great show. Thanks to Mike, John, & Shannon DeFatta for allowing me to perform here.
Thanks for supporting the Bobby Rex Group in 2012. We had the most shows we have ever done in any given year since we started playing out in the mid eighties. It's all thanks to you, the folks who support the local music scene and frequent the restaurants and venues where the Bobby Rex Group performs. Now in 2013 we're gearing up for some special shows, new venues, and updated musical projects.
The Sprig O' Mint All Stars (Bobby Rex's Irish music show) are still available for St. Patty's weekend parties. This fun trio features Chris Grant on violin and performs classic Irish drinking songs such as: Whiskey In the Jar, Mountain Dew, Drink It Up Men, Whiskey You're the Devil, Jug of Punch, Danny Boy, Too Rah Loo Ra, The Unicorn Song, as well as some of the classic Irish reels like Irish Washerwoman, Sailor's Hornpipe, Swallow Tail Jig, Kesh Jig, Drowsy Maggie, Morrison's Jig, Jackie Tar, and Ashokan Farewell. To round out the set the band performs old country standards, swing, early rock and roll, and folk. Call Bobby Rex soon at 708-415-6410 to book the trio at your St. Patty's Day party!
Stay on the lookout for Bobby Rex at these fine venues in January: Lovell's of Lake Forest, Coopers Hawk Winery & Restaurant (Burr Ridge, IL), J. Fleming's Absolutely Delicious (Westmont), and Tuscany (Oak Brook). It is that time of year when summer begins to fade to autumn before our eyes. September is more than half over and the nighttime temperatures get down into the low 50s. The White Sox are in 1st place playing great baseball for the moment. The Bobby Rex Group has just completed some crucial shows and some special thanks are in order.
First of all thanks must go out to Queen of Angels Catholic Elementary School in Chicago at Western & Sunnyside who hired the full 4-piece Bobby Rex Group for their Harvest Jam on Saturday afternoon September 15th. Special thanks goes out to Frank Manna and Cathy and Jon Mitchell who made it a reality for the band. The Bobby Rex Group hopes to be invited back in 2013. The band enjoyed playing and all had a blast.
Special thanks should also go out to Lovell's of Lake Forest who allowed The Bobby Rex Group (trio) to rock the house and keep people up dancing the night before. Friday night Sept 14th was a memorable night with Ira on bass and David Thornton on percussion. The wonderful guests, and you know who you are, were much appreciated by the band.
Thanks are also in order to Tony & Kristen of Scapa Italian Kitchen in Clarendon Hills for keeping Bobby & Steve on as the entertainment the 1st Friday of every month. It has worked out well for everyone in 2012. Bobby & Steve are looking forward to continuing on at Scapa into 2013. Also for 16 months Bobby & Steve have been in the regular music rotation at Weber Grill in Lombard. Thank you Weber Grill Lombard. Look for Bobby Rex solo at Weber Grill Lombard Thursday September 20th at 6pm.
Bobby Rex Group would also like to thank Sue O'Connell of Crescendo Music who has placed a Bobby Rex Duo in venues like Winberies, Countryside Saloon, Carriage Greens, Weber Grill Schaumburg, and Pompei of Orland. Look for Bobby Rex Duo in these venues in the upcoming months as well.
One last thanks goes out to Cooper's Hawk Winery & Restaurant in Burr Ridge. This is a great place to catch Bobby Rex solo. Having performed there twice already Bobby has 3 more dates on the books in the upcoming months.
Bobby Rex Group has a few dates open in November and December so call 708-415-6410 soon if you'd like to leave the music at your next event up to us. Bobby Rex Group is also beginning to fill in dates in 2013.

The Bobby Rex Trio offers quality live acoustic music ranging from popular songs that are currently on the radio to familiar classics that crowds love to sing along to. The trio consists of two guitarists and a bass player all of whom sing lead and backup harmonies. These three professionals and long time friends have performed together for audiences for 25 years. The trio performs familiar modern songs by Adele, Foster The People, and Jack Johnson as well as classic rock hits from the 50s, 60s, and 70s by artists such as Dion, Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen, the Grateful Dead, and the Beatles. With hundreds of songs in their repertoire the Bobby Rex Trio has material that will take audiences from rock and roll classics, to modern and alternative rock, and then back to Motown & pop with the vocals to back it up. Whether on center stage or as background music for your event, The Bobby Rex Trio delivers high quality live music for you enjoyment.
I would like to take a moment to thank all the people who have hired me to play music for their events so far this year. Mar 2012 was great with 13 shows (including the 2 open mics I hosted at Lovell's) plus some stage time at Paul Allodi's (Since I Was Three) band karaoke on Thurs. Mar. 29th at Tailgaters in Bolingbrook. This past weekend was a blast with a duo performance at the Countryside Saloon in Des Plaines where we kept going until past 1am. A few memorable songs performed Friday night were: No Excuses - Alice In Chains, Plush - Stone Temple Pilots, Pumped Up Kicks - Foster the People, All For You - Sister Hazel, Free Yet - Bobby Rex, Bizarre Love Triangle - New Order, and about 35 more songs from the 50s to today. The duo really rocked. We even managed to get in I Left My Heart In San Franciso - T. Bennett & That's Amore - Dean Martin.
The Saturday night Mar 31st Biff and the Waybacks benefit show for American Cancer Society Relay for Life at D's Sports Bar and Betting facility at Arlington Park Racetrack went phenomenal also. Biff and the Waybacks' 5-piece rock n' roll cover band performed party favorites in between raffles, auctions, and benefit announcements. Attendance was good and much money was raised for the cause. Biff and the Waybacks are still available for summer dates so contact Bobby or Paul to set something up if you are having a party and want a fun, rockin' cover band (with saxophone) and over 400 songs in our repertoire to choose from.

The acoustic open mic we started on the 1st Thursday of every month (Feb. 2nd being the 1st one) was well received. We now have the go-ahead to hold open mics both the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month. Enter the newest, most welcoming acoustic open mic in Lake County! Sign up time is 7pm. Bobby Rex will be your host from 7:30 to 10:30. Comedians, poets, soloists, accompanists, and duos most welcome. There will be a microphone or two and a guitar. There will be no drums, however a well placed shaker can go a long way in this room.
i must make mention of, and thank the musicians and entertainers who graced the stage for the 1st open mic. Grateful Gary Gibula sat in on bass and acoustic guitar as well as sang a few. Wayne Braxton a great bassist also played and accompanied singer-songwriter Melanie on her original selections. I hope they come back - I didn't get a chance to buy a cd. Mr. Pred Shreds tastefully played his 8 string guitar along with Bobby Rex, Gary, and Amazing Mike alternately through the night. Amazing Mike turned some heads toward the end with his singing, guitar palying, and trumpet playing display. We hope everyone comes back Thursday Feb. 16th and every 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month.
Please let management or I know what you think about continuing this sort of various entertainment during the week. Also, please "like" Bobby Rex Group on Facebook.
The remaining days of August have been wonderful weather-wise for the most part. As we bridge into September, the chances to see Bobby & Steve perform live are still a certainty. First of all, Steve Wall will be performing solo at a new venue for The Bobby Rex Group: Bella Luna Pizzeria & Bar in Glendale Heights. The exact address is 136 East Army Trail Road, Glendale Heights, IL. Steve will be starting at about 7:30pm. This is a preview for the Saturday September 10th performance here by both Bobby & Steve. We really want to help Bella Luna the best we can, so please come out to one of these dates, or both! View their menu online.
Thursday Sept. 1st Bobby & Steve will be performing at the rehearsal dinner party for BJ Wall and his fiance Hillary Stein in Oak Park. Congratulations to the wonderful couple! Bobby & Steve will also be performing at Lovell's of Lake Forest on the Saturday night Sept. 3rd. Start time is 8pm. We are just wrapping up 7 years of performing in the Captain's Quarters regularly, and looking forward to starting the 8th year in late October. Sunday afternoon September 4th Bobby & Steve find themselves entertaining at the 41st Annual Schaumburg Septemberfest. On Sunday Sept. 4th Bobby & Steve will be performing at the dining tent stage from 2:30 to 4:30pm. Stay tuned for more news in September. Mostly performing live is where it's at these days. Song writing and original music releases have been put on hold for the time being while live performances help pay the bills. Brand New Freak cd still available at www.cdbaby.com or at one of the live shows. Enjoy the remaining days of summer and the start of the new school year!
Olympia Fields Country Club Cabana from 7 to 10pm on Fri. August 12th will be such a joy. The full moon will be in its full glory. Saturday night the place for dinner and drinks from 7 to 10pm will be J. Fleming's Absolutely Delicious in Westmont. This will be our first time at this wonderful restaurant. Bobby & Steve will be performing al fresco. Thank you to Sue O'Connell at Crescendo Music for the night.
If there was only one night to ever come out in 2011 to see Bobby Rex perform, TUESDAY AUGUST 16 at SALT CREEK WINE BAR in Brookfield would be the one! Many requests will be taken and at least 12 original songs will be performed through the night. Some possible special guests. Performance starts at 7:30pm. No cover charge. Some really great wine and beer selections available along with cheeses and sandwiches into the night. Open ended in terms of when the music's over. Consider this a CD RELEASE PARTY for the remastered Brand New Freak recordings EP. Hope to see many good friends. I thank you in advance for supporting live music and allowing me to work in a field I love.
We must next mention the upcoming Weber Grill Performance in Lombard on Friday August 19th. This is a 6pm start. Bobby & Steve go strong until 9 at Smokey Joe's Bar at the Weber Grill. Weber Grill restaurant has been very good to us this summer. This is our only performance here in August. Sorry for the miscommunication between myself, Joey DeMarco and The Alley Highwood as Bobby Rex will not be performing at The Alley on this night.
Saturday night August 20th, Bobby & Steve will be back at Lovell's of Lake Forest singing and playing their hearts out for ya' once again. Lovell's has been a godsend. Always a pleasure to perform here. The atmosphere is just right for great food and music in the Captain's Quarters. This performance is from 8 to 11:30pm.
